Prince William's Brother Prince Harry Reportedly Gave Him Princess Diana's Engagement Ring For Kate Middleton
The Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex were very close growing up. Prince Harry also developed a close bond with Kate Middleton even before she married the heir to the throne.
Years before Prince William proposed to Middleton, Prince Harry gave their mom's engagement ring to him, so the future king could hand it to his wife-to-be.
According to Princess Diana's former butler Paul Burrell, Princess Diana's sons were given a chance to pick any of her prized possession as her memory. However, Prince William didn't pick their mom's engagement ring.
"I'd like mummy's Cartier watch, the one that Grandpa Spencer gave to her for her 21st birthday," Prince William said per Burrell in the Diana Story documentary, Mirror reported.
Meanwhile, he remembered Prince Harry picking up their mom's engagement ring for a sentimental reason.
"I remember when I held mummy's hand when I was a small boy and that ring always hurt me because it was so big," Prince Harry reportedly said.
The Duke of Sussex eventually handed the item to his older brother. He could have used Princess Diana's engagement ring to propose to his now-wife, Meghan Markle. However, he gave it to his sibling, and it ended up in the Princess of Wales' hand.
"This one thing he kept from his mother, he gave to his brother. That's selfless, kind, and exactly who Diana was," Burrell said of what Prince Harry did.
What Happened When Prince William Proposed To Kate Middleton?
Prince William took his time before he proposed to Kate Middleton. He only asked her hand in marriage almost 10 years after they started dating, prompting some to dub the Princess of Wales "Waity Katie."
During their engagement interview in 2010, the Prince of Wales shared how he tried to hide the ring from Middleton for three weeks before he popped the big question.
"I had been carrying it around with me in my rucksack for about three weeks before that and I literally would not let it go, everywhere I went I was keeping hold of it because I knew this thing, if it disappeared I would be in a lot of trouble and because I'd planned it, it went fine," he said.
"You hear a lot of horror stories about proposing and things going horribly wrong - it went really, really well and I was really pleased she said yes."
Prince William said his mom's engagement ring was a "way of making sure my mother didn't miss out." Middleton acknowledged the value of the ring, saying, it was "very special."

How Did Prince Harry Incorporate Princess Diana In His Proposal To Meghan Markle?
After giving way to Prince William, Prince Harry made a way to still remember their mom in his proposal to Meghan Markle. He customized a ring with diamonds from Princess Diana's personal collection.
"The little diamonds on either side are from my mother's jewellery collection to make sure she's with us on this crazy journey together," Prince Harry told BBC.
"Obviously not being able to meet his mom, it's so important to me to know that she's a part of this with us," Markle added.
