Pirates of the Caribbean Project Reportedly in the Works Without Johnny Depp

The Pirates of the Caribbean series was dragged into the public eye during the widely-publicized defamation trial between Johnny Depp and his estranged former wife, Amber Heard. The legal battle shed some light on how the company drastically fired Depp when Heard's allegations come on to the scene, ending with Depp ultimately swearing that he will never return as Jack Sparrow again.

However, even though the Fantastic Beasts actor is firm with his decision never to work with Disney again to reprise his fan-beloved role, it appears that the studio is still pushing a Pirates of the Caribbean project that doesn't require Depp's return.

According to a new report by Giant Freakin Robot, an animated Pirates of the Caribbean series is "being revived" under Disney+, which could momentarily avoid the huge fan disfavors while safely rebooting the franchise:

"An animated Pirates of the Caribbean series could allow Disney to recast Captain Jack Sparrow without necessarily drawing the fan anger, much in the same way that Marvel’s What If…? series cast Mick Wingert to voice Tony Stark rather than the presumably much more expensive Robert Downey Jr. An animated series could also potentially act as a ramp-up to a new feature film or a reboot by introducing characters or explaining what happened to old ones without the enormous cost of a theatrical release. As with both Star Wars and the MCU, it is clear that Disney+ is the way of the future."

Johnny Depp first starred as the eccentric pirate Jack Sparrow in 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and made his last appearance on 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge and was officially fired by Disney in 2018 just four days after Heard's domestic violence claim.

To be fair, developing a Pirates of the Caribbean animated series and recasting another voice actor for Jack Sparrow seems to be the only plausible option for Disney to test the waters, considering the tremendous outrage the studio received from the fans when Depp's abrupt ousting was brought to light. Nonetheless, the Pirates of the Caribbean was one of Disney's triumphant series, and it's absolutely intriguing how they will continue Jack Sparrow's legacy with or without Johnny Depp.
