Pierce Brosnan Lost Batman Role To 'Stupid' Underwear Comment

Pierce Brosnan recently got the role of Doctor Fate in the new DC film, Black Adam and admitted on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show how becoming a superhero, let alone an acting career, was the ‘last thing on his mind.’ Watch the interview below:

“I left school at 16 or 17 with nothing but a cardboard folder of drawings and paintings, and I thought, ‘I’m off to be an artist.’ And then I discovered acting, or acting discovered me.” He chuckles at the thought. “Thank God for that.”

And now he’s off to play Doctor Fate in Black Adam, who’s one of the most iconic and longstanding members of the Justice Society of America. His on-screen appearance would soon be depicted as one of the most powerful yet dangerous superhumans in the DCEU, since his powers are very much similar to the ones America Chavez possesses in Doctor Strange 2: Multiverse of Madness.

“It was the last thing on my mind to be playing a superhero like Doctor Fate.” And when Jimmy Fallon commented how big of a name the actor made out in the world, presuming Pierce could easily grab any role he could dream of, the actor replies, “Not really, no.”

In fact, the actor continued to share how he auditioned for Tim Burton’s Batman and how he ‘obviously’ didn’t get the job by making a cheeky joke on the superhero’s suit. But overall, he sends his congratulations to the ‘best man for the job’, Michael Keaton.

“I remember saying something stupid to Tim Burton. Like, I said — I said, ‘You know, I can’t understand any man who would wear his underpants outside his trousers.’ And so, it’s just like — But there you go. The best man got the job.”

“Doctor Fate and I were meant to meet on the same page, I think.” Brosnan delegates, continuing on to share his experience in making use of the suit while working on set, a very much similar response to how he found the Batsuit.

“Everybody wants to know what it was like putting on the costume, ‘What was it like putting on the helmet?’ You know, you can’t see a thing. It’s darkness. I mean, there were two helmets: there was this stylish, gorgeous-looking, sleek helmet and then there was one that I could actually physically put on. But, of course, you’re standing there in a mocap suit — a motion capture suit — which is the most inelegant and kind of humorous thing to wear. Ping pong balls, gray tights, you know, you got to have a sense of humor.”

Black Adam is set to hit theaters next week, October 21.
