Pedro Pascal’s Queer Cowboy Film Lands Theatrical Release

The Mandalorian and The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal is set to star alongside co-star Ethan Hawke in Pedro Almodóvar’s queer cowboy film titled Strange Way of Life, which, as the director claimed, is his “answer” to not getting to direct Brokeback Mountain.

Strange Way of Life revolves around a sheriff named Jake (Hawke) and a gunslinger called Silva (Pascal) where the pair live on opposite sides of the desert and have never seen each other for 25 years, despite both working as hired gunmen. The movie explores rekindling their friendship, but ultimately leads to something more.

“One of them travels through the desert to find the other,” Almodóvar previously explained the synopsis with IndieWire, “There will be a showdown between them, but really the story is very intimate.” When asked if romance is involved between the two stars, the director said, “You can guess. I mean, masculinity is one of the subjects of the movie.”

It is worth mentioning that Almodóvar was initially attached to helm Brokeback Mountain which portrays similar themes, and seeing him direct this film potentially means a romance between Hawke and Pascal’s characters.

“It’s a queer Western, in the sense that there are two men and they love each other.” Almodóvar explained on Dua Lipa’s At Your Service podcast (via The Gay Times), “It’s about masculinity in a deep sense because the Western is a male genre.”

This wouldn’t be the first time we’ll be seeing Pascal portraying a queer man. His previous Game of Thrones role as Oberyn Martell can testify to that. It would be interesting how Pascal spins his role in this one.

Pascal has been quite the buzz since starring in The Mandalorian as the titular character Din Djarin, and later on fanned on his flaming fame by joining The Last of Us as Joel Miller.

Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal’s Strange Way of Life will premiere sometime in May at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
