Pedro Pascal Gets Honest About The Last of Us Season 2's Impending Joel Twist

With the second season of The Last of Us now underway, fans are also starting to wonder about how faithful will it be to The Last of Us: Part II video game, especially considering that Joel has a shocking death earlier in the story. The character's demise would also mean that Pedro Pascal will exit the series early.

So far, signs are pointing that the second season will be following the game based on the interviews with the showrunners and it is curious to see how they will actually handle it.

In an interview with Esquire, Pascal was asked about his thoughts regarding the second season's impending twist regarding his character. He explained that he believes that they have to follow the events of the game since they set up that path during the first season.

"It wouldn’t make sense to follow the first game so faithfully only to stray severely from the path. So, yeah, that’s my honest answer," he said.

Pascal's co-star Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, also chimed in and said, "If that does take place in the show. I don’t know that I’m emotionally ready for it."

Craig Mazin, co-showrunner of the series, also addressed the impending Joel twist in the second season. "This should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but I don’t fear killing characters. But the important thing to note is that neither Neil [Druckmann, who co-created and exec-produces the series with Mazin] nor I feel constrained by the source material," he told the outlet.

Based on what we're hearing, it looks like they are continuing to iterate that the Joel twist will indeed happen in the second season and fans of the show now need to start preparing for the heartbreak that is about to come.

This is certainly an interesting direction for the series since Pascal is their biggest star and he is obviously one of its leads. However, as proven by any HBO shows such as just recently in Succession, they are not afraid to kill off a main character no matter what the audience's response will be.
