In a new interview, Murphy teased the darker tone of the new season, calling it "dark as f**k." He plays Birmingham-based gang leader Thomas Shelby in the aftermath of World War I.

Murphy addressed how far the series will push its cast in an interview with Esquire regarding his part and the show's final season. Murphy avoided delving into too much detail about the final season, calling it "dark as f**k," but admitting that he wasn't sure if Tommy would have a happy ending.

Despite his doubts about Tommy's redemption by the end of the series, Murphy expressed faith in creator Steven Knight's ideas. Murphy added that, while he is unsure himself, he will leave it up to the audience to determine whether Tommy gets the ending he deserves and whether he has atoned for his past sins.

“I think [redemption is] what Steve was aiming for. With loads of wrong turns along the way. But I don’t know,” the actor said. “I’ll leave that to the court of public opinion. I don’t know if he’s been redeemed.”

What’s Next for Thomas Shelby?

Peaky Blinders Season 6 is expected to feature some of the series' most character-driven scenes, with Tommy being broken and left at such a dismal point in Season 5. Tommy is one of television's most complex characters, despite the show's great recognition and significance.

However, with Murphy implying that viewers would have to determine if Tommy's ending is fitting, his destiny may divide fans.

Peaky Blinders Season 6 was confirmed to be the final season in 2021, although the BBC has left the door open for life after the television series' conclusion.

Following a gap caused by production delays during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Knight announced on the series' website that the sixth season would be the series' final, promising the highest stakes and best season yet. Knight later revealed that the BBC's crime epic will be properly completed by a Peaky Blinders movie, guaranteeing a larger budget for the project.
