There will be 16 episodes in the massive Outlander Season 7, which is now in production. But the lead actor, Sam Heughan, might be prepared to leave the career-launching role after over 10 years in it. The ending of Outlander is something that "we've been talking about," he recently admitted.

Outlander Season 7 Star Drops Devastating News

Heughan reiterated in a recent interview with Square Mile that they had been discussing the finale of Outlander. And when the long-running series actually makes its final season, he shared what he will miss about working with the actors and crew.

"We've been talking about it," Heughan said. "What will I miss? I'll miss the camaraderie, the people, the routine. The routine is pretty tough, pretty full on."

He continued: "But there's something wonderful about it, going to work every day, you know you all are going to be fucked but the end. It's hard work, it's full on, but you're all in it together. So I guess that camaraderie and being around people you enjoy being around."

Sam Heughan Has Been Dropping Hints

Heughan revealed earlier this year that he could "absolutely see Outlander without me" after it was reported that Starz was developing the prequel series Blood of My Blood.

Heughan and Caitriona Balfe have just signed on for Outlander Season 7, and Starz has yet to announce whether the series has been renewed for Season 8. Diana Gabaldon, author of Outlander, is "amazed and pleased" that the show has lasted seven seasons. However, she and the showrunners have begun discussing possible endings.

Diana Gabaldon Already Knows How Outlander Will End

Outlander's seasons are roughly based on the corresponding books of the author Diana Gabaldon's literary series, as fans are aware. If Starz permits the series to go on, there would be a total of 10 seasons of Outlander if the one book each season formula holds true.

If it doesn't get 10 seasons, the show will reach one of those "conditional conclusions" Gabaldon mentioned. However, until readers are able to read the tenth and final book, which Gabaldon is currently writing, the fans' love story won't truly be done.

For over two decades, the author has known the ending of Jamie and Claire's narrative. But she only started writing the final book last year. She hasn't finished the novel yet, but Heughan claims Gabaldon has told him how the main Outlander series ends.

"I know how it ends, Diana has told me, but we still have a long way to go before we get to that," Heughan told The Times.

It's too early to start the countdown, but Deadline reported that we can expect Outlander season 7, episode 1 to premiere as soon as "late 2022/early 2023."
