The clever title for the gap between seasons, "droughtlander," has returned, this time extended due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, the program is returning for another chapter, and the first teaser trailer for Outlander Season 6 has been dropped:

Outlander Season 6 Premiere Date, Story

The adventure will resume on Sunday, March 6, 2022, with a special extended episode.

Outlander Season 6 will take place soon after Claire's brutal encounter with Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) in Diana Gabaldon's A Breath of Snow and Ashes, and viewers will follow Claire and Jamie as they try to alter alliances ahead of the Revolutionary War.

During the launch of the ninth novel in the series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, in November 2021, Gabaldon hinted at what the future might hold for Outlander, with the show already renewed for Season 7.

"It depends on Jamie and Claire. If they're not ready to die yet, I guess I will have to go on," Gabaldon explained, referring to previous discussions about capping the book series at 10 novels.

New Challenges for Jamie & Claire

Because a new season of Outlander wouldn't be complete without putting our favorite protagonists through the emotional wringer! On Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Maril Davis discussed the hurdles the duo will encounter.

Jamie's old nemesis, Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones), and his two children, Allan (Alexander Vlahos) and Malva (Alexander Vlahos), have arrived, posing a new threat (Jessica Reynolds). According to Balfe, the arrival of the family will be "very destabilizing for Claire," and the Frasers' interaction with the Christies will be "a really heartbreaking, but a really twisted narrative that they all get embroiled in."

During his appearance at New York Comic-Con, Sam Heughan recently added fuel to that worrying fire. He claims that after Jamie and Claire have spent so much time and energy creating a home for themselves at Fraser's Ridge, Season 6 will "really see that disintegrate... I think these cracks are really starting to show — not only for Jamie and Claire but for the rest of the inhabitants of Fraser’s Ridge. The war is coming,” he said, according to Us Weekly.

Outlander Season 7

Outlander's sixth season had to be shortened due to the pandemic, but fans need not worry: Starz has just announced an extended season seven, featuring 16 episodes, to make up for this "droughtlander."

Deadline says production on Season 7 will start “soon.”
