Aside from being a certified box office hit, One Piece Film: Red’s theme song, New Genesis, by Ado is also officially the number 1 song in Japan in 2022.
Recently, Japanese FM radio station J-Wave announced the top 100 songs of 2022 in the country based on radio play and streaming numbers.
Ado’s song for the new One Piece movie topped the chart, solidifying Ado’s popularity in the country.
One Piece Film: Red Original Songs
One Piece Film: Red is the latest film in the long-running One Piece franchise, and it was also made to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary.
To mark this special occasion, the film’s creators decided to make this movie special.
Not only does this film feature fan-favorite Shanks as a major character, but it is also the first film in the franchise to be a musical.
While many anime films feature songs, this movie features full-blown musical numbers courtesy of the main character, Uta.
Uta is significant for being one of the few One Piece movie characters to be considered part of the series’ canon.
Providing her singing voice is Ado, one of Japan’s most popular contemporary pop singers.
For the film, Ado performed six songs, enough for an album release. The song New Genesis is considered the One Piece film’s theme song, so it makes sense that it’s the song that stood out.

'New Genesis' Is Japan’s Top Song of 2022
Aside from radio and streaming play counts, the J-Wave chart also includes download data, CD sales, tweets, and other factors.
The chart was also made in partnership with Billboard Japan, lending it even more credibility.
While it may be surprising for an anime song to top the 2022 charts, it makes sense given how big of a hit One Piece Film: Red is.
Not to mention that Ado has been popular in Japan since late 2020.

- Hold My Hand by Lady Gaga
While eight of the top 10 songs are not anime music, the top two are.
The second song in the chart is the first Spy x Family opening song, Mixed Nuts, by Official Hige Dandism.
Similar to New Genesis, Spy x Family’s opening was also performed by a popular band, so it makes sense for it to get the second spot in the chart.
