One Piece Film: Red Dominates With 2.25 Billion Yen Opening Weekend


It has been a long wait but One Piece Film: Red has finally been released in Japan. Not surprisingly, fans have rushed to enjoy the movie in theaters over the weekend, pushing the anime film to the top spot of the Japanese box office as it brings in 2.254 billion yen in its first two days alone!

According to Anime News Network, One Piece Film: Red headed straight for the number one spot at the Japanese box office in its opening weekend. The report confirms that the movie sold 1.58 million tickets and has earned 2.254 billion yen (about US$16.7 million) from Saturday to Sunday.

This isn't exactly a huge surprise considering the hype for the movie right from the start. Now, it looks like One Piece Film: Red is well on its way to becoming one of the most successful anime movies of all time.

One Piece Film: Red follows Uta, the most beloved singer in the world. After making a name for herself without revealing her identity, she decides that she will unveil herself to the world at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans, it is time for the world to learn that Uta is Red-Haired Shanks' daughter.

The movie stars Mayumi Tanaka as Monkey D. Luffy, Kazuya Nakai as Roronoa Zoro, Akemi Okamura as Nami, Kappei Yamaguchi as Usopp, Hiroaki Hirata as Sanji, Ikue Otani as Chopper, Yuriko Yamaguchi as Nico Robin, Kazuki Yao as Franky, Cho as Brook, and Katsuhisa Hoki as Jimbei. Uta is played by Kaori Nazuka while Kenjiro Tsuda provides the voice of the mysterious Gordon.

One Piece Film: Red premiered in theaters in Japan on August 6, 2022. The international release dates are set for Fall 2022.
