Disney and Lucasfilm dropped a bomb on Star Wars fans in December, revealing 7 new Disney+ TV shows, including Ahsoka, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Rangers of the New Republic, as well as Rogue Squadron, and an untitled Taika Waititi film. One new series people are particularly excited about is Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Not only are fans excited, but Ewan McGregor has also been ecstatic to reprise his titular role. In 2019, he said on The Ellen Show, "For four years I was saying, 'Well I'd be happy to do it again! I'm just waiting for the call.' It was embarrassing! Lying!"

Now that it is official, here is everything you need to know about the Obi Wan series that has been released so far.

Obi Wan release date: When will it be released on Disney+?
The Obi Wan release date could be as early as March 2022. Looking at other Star Wars shows, The Mandalorian Season 2 was released about one year after filming began. According to Ewan McGregor in an interview on the Graham Norton Show, filming will begin for Obi Wan in March 2021. Based on this filming date, a release of March 2022 or thereafter seems most likely. Because of Covid-19 restrictions and post-production times, a 2021 release is out of the question.

So far, Ewan McGregor is confirmed to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Hayden Christensen will reprise his role as Anakin and Vader. No other cast has been officially confirmed. Deborah Chow, who worked on season one of The Mandalorian will be directing the series.

Obi Wan plot: What is it about?

According to Lucasfilm, the synopsis for the show is as follows: "The series begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where he faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader."

Few plot details have been leaked, but information coming from the latest Kessel Run Transmissions live stream suggested that Commander Cody will return as a villain on a mission to track down Obi-Wan Kenobi.

While most are excited at Hayden reprising his role, some fans have raised concerns over how Vader's return will impact Star Wars canon. After all, Vader's return in A New Hope is supposed to be the first time they meet since the fateful day in Revenge of the Sith.

Obi Wan timeline: When does it take place?

The Obi Wan series timeline is as follows: 10 years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, 1-4 years after Solo: A Star Wars Story, 4 years before Star Wars Rebels, and 9 years before Rogue One and A New Hope.

19 BBY - Revenge of the Sith

13-10 BBY - Solo: A Star Wars Story

9 BBY - Obi Wan Series

5-1 BBY - Star Wars Rebels

0 BBY - Rogue One

0 BBY - A New Hope

Obi Wan episode count: How many will there be?

There hasn't been an official episode count released by Disney. It was rumored earlier in this year that there would be 4 episodes, cut down from an original 6.

Obi Wan trailer: When will it be released?

Considering the show won't begin filming until March of 2021, we don't expect a trailer until the end of 2021 at the earliest. In the meantime, we do have the above title teaser!

Obi Wan Cameos: Who will make a guest appearance?

Given the close timeline between Solo: A Star Wars Story and the Obi Wan series, it's possible Han Solo could make an appearance. This might be tough to explain to hardcore fans, because Obi-Wan doesn't meet Han Solo until A New Hope. Ignoring that, Solo has had encounters with Imperials, so he could do a fly-by and annoy Vader.

Obi Wan Director: Who will be making the show?

At D23 in December, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced Deborah Chow as the Obi Wan series director. Chow is best known for her previous work directing The Mandalorian, American Gods, and The Man in the High Castle.

The two episodes she directed in The Mandalorian, titled "The Sin" and "The Reckoning" received a rating of 9.1 on IMDB and are among the best rated of the series.

She has also received a Turin Film Festival award for Best Short and the Comedy Central Award for Best Comedy Screenplay.

Obi Wan Lightsaber: Which lightsaber will he use in the show?

Ob-Wan Kenobi is expected to use his third and final lightsaber in the Obi Wan series. He used this lightsaber in the Clone Wars and against Darth Vader in the first-ever Star Wars lightsaber duel, which took place on the Death Star. It is unlikely he would use his first lightsaber, which was lost on Naboo after fighting Darth Maul. His second lightsaber was taken when he was captured on Geonosis by Count Dooku.
