Nicolas Cage Cast as Dracula in Renfield Spin-off Film

It looks like Nicolas Cage has found himself another unusual role to play! The Con Air star has just been cast as Count Dracula in an upcoming spin-off movie that will be told from R.M. Renfield's point of view.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Nicolas Cage will be joining Renfield, a new horror flick being developed by Universal Pictures. The film will also star Mad Max: Fury Road actor Nicholas Hoult who will play the titular character who serves as Dracula's henchman. Chris McKay will direct while Rick and Morty's Ryan Ridley will pen the screenplay which is based on Robert Kirkman's outline.

The premise of Renfield has not yet been revealed. However, it is expected to tell the mental asylum patient's side of the story that unfolded in Bram Stoker's gothic novel. There are speculations that the film will be set in modern times.

Kirkman had previously spoken about the project explaining that it's a film about Renfield being Dracula's henchman and how it is "a sh-tty job."

"It's a fun, extremely violent comedy because I've got a crutch and it's violence," Kirkman said.

This isn't the first time that Nicolas Cage has played a vampire. One of his first leading roles was in 1988's Vampire's Kiss where he played a mentally unstable literary agent who believes he was bitten by a seductive vampire. Although the vampiric symptoms are there, Cage's character is so unhinged that it is unclear if he truly is a vampire. His performance is so iconic that it gave us that infamous Nicolas Cage meme.

For now, Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult are the only stars confirmed for Renfield. The project is still in early development and has not been given a production start date. Likewise, it does not have a release date yet. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
