Gintama may be one of the biggest anime ever in terms of sheer episode count, but fans can’t seem to get enough of it. While the anime’s story has essentially ended, fans will be delighted with the announcement of a new Gintama anime.
At the recent Ato no Matsuri event in Japan, a new Gintama anime series was announced, and it promises to deliver lots of laughs as it is an adaptation of the 3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei spinoff.
As the word "sensei" in the title implies, this is a spinoff series that puts the series’ cast in a high school setting.
Gintama: One of Shonen Jump’s Most Beloved Comedies
While battle shounen like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen are typically Shonen Jump’s most popular titles, Gintama is one of the exceptions as it’s a huge comedy series.
How huge? Well, the manga has over 55 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga titles not only for Shonen Jump but also for all manga.
It was also popular enough that it got an anime adaptation with multiple seasons, totaling 367 episodes throughout its run.
Funnily enough, the anime series didn’t completely cover the manga’s story, but this makes sense as the manga has 698 chapters in total.
Nonetheless, fans of the anime were treated to an adaptation of the manga’s ending with the Gintama: The Very Final movie in 2021.
This movie is an adaptation of the manga’s ending and it serves as a conclusion to the anime series’ storyline.

New Gintama Anime Announced
At the recent Gintama event, the new 3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei anime was announced, and it’s an adaptation of the light novel spinoff of the same name.
In this spinoff, Gintoki is known as Ginpachi Sakata who is now a high school teacher.
There, the students are the other characters in the series. Essentially, you can think of it like Great Teacher Onizuka, but with Gintoki.
This actually isn’t the first time that this light novel was adapted into anime.
Segments of this light novel were animated before as shorts which were played at the end of certain Gintama anime episodes.
For now, there’s no word yet on when this new Gintama school anime will be released.
There’s also no info yet on how many episodes it will have, but if you ask any Gintama fan, they’ll probably want this new series to have hundreds of episodes.
