New Data Suggests Disney Plus Potentially Getting Another Price Hike

Disney+ recently suffered from a shocking drop of subscribers during the last months of 2022. It’s no secret that Disney has been looking for ways to make a profit amidst its numerous layoffs and delays in Star Wars and MCU films and shows. Now, a new report emerges, indicating that despite the Walt Disney Company spiking up its monthly subscription price, its current subscriber count remained on their accounts.

See, last December, Disney+ introduced an ad-supported option while raising the price of its ad-free option from $7.99/month to $10.99/month. According to new data from subscription-analytics firm Antenna (via The Wall Street Journal), in spite of the $3 increase on the monthly subscription price for the streaming platform, 94% of the subscribers didn’t seem to complain and stayed on Disney+’s service.

However, it remains to be seen if the 6% of the subscribers canceled their Disney+ subscription or moved to an ad-supported option. Though Disney has yet to officially address whether the numbers are accurate, the data suggests that the company is planning to raise its streaming price further, beyond the price of $10.99 a month.

It is worth mentioning that Disney has not yet announced another price hike. Although Disney CEO Bob Iger recently said that, “In our zeal to grow global [subscriptions], I think we were off in terms of that pricing strategy, and we’re now starting to learn more about it and to adjust accordingly. We have a lot of rationalization to do from a pricing perspective, but that’s one path to profitability.”

Apart from Marvel Studios postponing their Marvel Phase 5 films and shows previously slated to release this 2023, Disney+ had even set Loki Season 2 and Secret Invasion (both of which were the remaining MCU series supposedly set to release this year) to “Coming Soon”, which indicates another major setback in the progression of the franchise.

There’s no telling when exactly Disney plans on another price hike, but since the House of Mouse has yet to speak out on this, only time can tell if increasing the monthly subscription would be the best long-run option for the company.
