Tim Burton is widely known for his dark gothic films like 2010's Alice in Wonderland, Beetlejuice, Coraline, Edward Scissorhands, and the like, so it came as no surprise that he will be directing The Addams Family horror spinoff series, Wednesday. The only question is, why not sooner? Although he was one in talks of making a stop-motion Addams Family film for Universal, the studio wanted to go with a "more computer-generated way."
On Empire, he reveals, "When I read this [script], it just spoke to me about how I felt in school and how you feel about your parents, how you feel as a person. It gave the Addams Family a different kind of reality. It was an interesting combination." The Director felt less lonely upon reading about the titular character. In fact, he went so far as to admit he shares the "same world view" with Wednesday.
This, of course, was presented accurately in the promotional material, setting the scene and mood for the upcoming series. In a teaser clip of Nevermore Academy, headmistress Larissa Weems (played by Gwendoline Christie) reels potential students with a question, "In a world full of normies, do you feel like an outcast?" The short clip showed a couple of students and creatures who feel like outcasts in the normal world with a promise that these characters would be the soon-to-be peers of teenage Wednesday.
Burton reminisced about the time he felt like a "male" Carrie in high school prom. "I felt that feeling of having to be there, but not be part of it. They don't leave you, those feelings, as much as you want them to go."
The series, Wednesday, will follow the Addams family's teenage daughter (played by Jenna Ortega) as she attends Nevermore Academy, the boarding school where her parents Morticia and Gomez Addams (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman) met each other and fell in love. In an attempt to "fit in", she uncovers the history of her family, with the show's promise of "mystery, mayhem, and murder."
