Netflix Pulls the Plug on Jeff Smith's Bone Animated Series

A few years ago, we learned that Netflix is working on an animated series adaptation of the award-winning comic series Bone, with creator Jeff Smith also involved to spearhead the production. Since then, we haven't heard a lot of details regarding the project which had also been delayed several times as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, unfortunately, it looks like the series is no longer moving forward.

According to TheWrap, Netflix has canceled the animated series adaptation of Bone as a result of the reorganization of the streamer's animation department. It is unknown yet if the project will move to other networks or streamers. In addition, other projects such as Roald Dahl's The Twists and Lauren Faust's Toil and Trouble have also been retooled as feature films instead.

Prior to the cancellation, Smith revealed in an interview with Polygon last year that, while the COVID-19 pandemic caused the production to be delayed, he was able to assemble the creative team that he wanted for the project. "There were a couple of people that worked on some shows that I [asked about]," he said. "Because I watched a bunch of Cartoon Network shows and some Netflix shows. Is this person around? Can we get this person? What's this guy doing now? Or what's she doing? And thanks to the pandemic, I was able to get everybody I wanted."

He continued, "I say thanks because there were people that were in contract, but we were delayed by like, eight or nine months because of the pandemic; [by that time] the contracts were up, and I got everybody I wanted. I don’t want to really say who they are, because I don’t want to steal Netflix’s thunder but, yes. I got my dream team of animation people, and I’m pretty excited about it so far."

In case you're not familiar with Bone, it is an award-winning independently-published comic series created by Smith that ran for 55 issues from 1991 to 2004. The story follows Fone Bone and his two cousins, Phoncible P. "Phoney" Bone and Smiley Bone, as they go on a series of adventures.

It is unfortunate to hear that the Bone animated series is in the works since fans have been looking forward to seeing the comics adapted to the screen. However, it doesn't mean that we might never see it actually happen since there's a possibility that the project will move to another streamer or network. Let's just hope that we will hear some news about it soon.
