Netflix has an upcoming single-camera video store comedy series from Universal Television, and it's called Blockbuster. The first-look photo on the set of the ensemble comedy series stars Fresh Off the Boat’s Randall Park and Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Melissa Fumero.

The original series is based on the real-life Blockbuster business company, the home movie and video game rental store that became internationally known throughout the 1990s and was a staple in various American cities. It was a popular spot to rent or buy DVDs, videogames and other media before Netflix and the world of streaming took over.

According to Deadline, the single-camera comedy series takes place in the last Blockbuster video store in America. Right now, only one franchised store remains open in Bend, Oregon in the U.S..

The official synopsis from Netflix reads:

"An ensemble comedy that takes place in the last Blockbuster Video in America, that explores what it takes – and more specifically who it takes – for a small business to succeed against all odds."

According to TV Insider, Timmy is the store manager and Eliza is his trusty number two, and maybe more.

After leaving Harvard after one semester to begin a family, Eliza's life didn't turn out the way she expected it would. As her marriage to her high school sweetheart is facing problems, there's a lot of uncertainty. And, despite the differences, she, Timmy, and the rest of the Blockbuster crew have, they make a fun team.

Here are the cast members of Netflix's ensemble comedy:

  • Randall Park as Timmy - described to be a dreamer and lover of films.
  • Melissa Fumero as Eliza - a headstrong female in her 40s and dedicated mother whose marriage to her high school sweetheart is on the rocks. She left Harvard after one semester to start a family and now works at Blockbuster.
  • Tyler Alvarez as Carlos - a young male in his 20s and is described movie aficionado which leads him to come off as a snob.
  • Madeleine Arthur as Hannah - a young girl in her 20s and described as a girl next door.
  • Olga Merediz as Connie - described as maternal and that she works in Blockbuster because of the friends she’s made there and certainly not the money
  • J. B. Smoove as Percy - the strip mall and parter store owner. His daughter works at the Blockbuster store
  • Kamaia Fairburn as Kayla - youngest of Blockbuster's main cast members who is described as stylish and too cool for school

When will Blockbuster be released on Netflix?

Update: All ten episodes of Blockbuster Season 1 are now available to stream on Netflix.

Netflix has officially announced the release date for Blockbuster. The comedy series is set to release on November 3, 2022.

As Deadline reported, Blockbuster was created by Vanessa Ramos. She has an impressive resume working as a co-producer on Superstore as well as serving as writer on other NBS shows such as Kenan, Crashing, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Ramos also served as a consulting producer on Netflix’s Big Mouth series.

Jackie Clarke and David Caspe serve as writers and executive producers alongside Ramos. John Fox and John Davis will also executive produce. Payman Benz will direct four episodes (episodes 1, 2, 7, and 8), including the pilot episode. The director previously worked on A.P. Bio, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and is directing episodes on the upcoming HBO Max series Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.
