The series stars Vanessa Lachey as Jane Tennant, a single mom who had to prioritize her job as the special agent in charge over her daughter's soccer team practice.

In the first episode of NCIS: Hawaii, audiences were introduced to Tennant and her entire team. It didn't take long before deep-seated professional friction between Special Agent Lucy and DIA Agent Kate came to light.

In one of the scenes, Lucy showed up at Kate's house and it became obvious that they have a romantic past. For now, Lucy and Kate are not officially together, but they are the first LGBTQ characters introduced in the series.

While speaking with TV Line, executive producer Jan Nash said that the decision to introduce LGBTQ characters in the series was their way of making sure that they have a diverse ensemble.

"Our desire was to create a show that had a really diverse — and we meant that in every way — a palette of characters. And having these two characters as part of that," she said.

The exec also confirmed that from the get-go, they wrote Lucy's character as a member of the LGBTQ community. However, Lucy's relationship with Kate was written into the show much later.

"We want these characters to feel like they have full lives — they have families, they have interests, they struggle with things — and certainly relationships are a part of that. But on a procedural show, when you have a case going on it's difficult to be like, ‘But I have a date tonight!' So having Whistler in our world, in an NCIS-adjacent role, seemed like a way we could add relational qualities to our show that wouldn't impede our procedural storytelling," she said.

One of the storylines that audiences are now watching out for has to do with Lucy and Kate's relationship. Since there was obvious chemistry between the two, fans can't wait to see if Lucy and Kate will get back together or if their romantic past will be explored further.

And by the looks of it, there's more to these two characters than meets the eye. And since NCIS: Hawaii Season 1 just premiered, there are a lot of opportunities to see Lucy and Kate's story unfold.

However, Nash shared an inside scoop when it came to casting the two female characters. She said that there's an obvious height difference between Lucy and Kate because they cast the characters via Zoom.

"Everybody's the size of their head and shoulders in a box, so we had no idea! [Yasmine and Tori] got these roles because they were the actors who really sold the parts in their auditions, and then they showed up and we were like, ‘Oh my!'" she told TV Line.
