National Treasure: Edge of History is set roughly 15 years after the events of National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets, which was released in 2007. The series follows Jess, a girl who discovers her late father was involved in a secret network of treasure protectors.

This knowledge propels her on an epic quest with special appearances by Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) and Peter Sadusky (Harvey Keitel).

Even though the Disney+ series has a large cast of new characters, it is obvious that it is set in the same world as the Nicolas Cage movies.

When Riley is introduced into the plot, the role that Cage played is even mentioned. For fans, this is definitive evidence that a third movie is possible.

National Treasure: Edge of History Reception

The all-new Disney+ series, National Treasure: Edge of History, is a dream come true for fans who have been immersed in Disney's National Treasure franchise for years.

The show premiered on the platform in mid-December 2022 and has received positive feedback from critics and fans alike, with many complimenting the show's commitment to expanding the universe of the original franchise while introducing new characters and storylines.

While many fans are thrilled to see the National Treasure universe brought back to life, critics are divided. The series now has a 44% rating on the review site Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 33% average audience score.

A second season of the show may or may not be approved in the end, but for the time being, some fans appear to be at least fascinated by the notion.

Third National Treasure Film Could Still Happen

It is established that Riley, who is portrayed by Bartha, is still very much active in the historical mystery subgenre when he first appears in the television series. He acknowledged that he and his old friend Ben Gates are deeply embroiled in a brand-new mystery, even if his main emphasis appears to be developing a podcast.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Riley assures Jess that he hasn't retired from treasure hunting: "Not retired. Ben and I have been working on this critical project for three, four, or 15 years."

"Let's just say, there's 47 reasons to be interested," he adds.

Of course, longstanding fans of the movie will recall that "Page 47" is addressed in National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets, as a page in the Book of Secrets that Ben describes as "life-altering."

Fans have long hypothesized that the mysterious Page 47 could be the subject of a third National Treasure film, while no definitive information about the status of a third film has been disclosed.
