Nathan Lane Protected by 'Saint' Robin Williams on Oprah

In an interview on Sunday Today, Lane recalled how the late Robin Williams protected him from coming out as gay against his will on Oprah while promoting their movie The Birdcage.

In the film, the two stars played a gay couple. Given the movie's theme, he still wasn't ready to come out publicly then.

"I was not prepared at all for that," he said via Variety. "And I certainly wasn't ready to go from table to table and tell them all I was gay. I just wanted to talk about finally [getting] a big part in a movie, and I didn't want to make it about my sexuality."

He knew playing a gay character would open the discussions about his sexuality, and he told Williams he wasn't prepared yet.

"He said, 'Oh, it's alright, don't worry about — we don't have to talk about it. We won't talk about it,'" Lane recalled the comedian telling him.

But fear started to creep in when Oprah Winfrey asked him questions that left the door open for him to come out.

From there, Williams "swooped in and diverted Winfrey, went off on a tangent, and protected" Lane "because he was a saint." "Beautiful, sensitive soul," he continued.
