Mulan: Jet Li Will Still Have Fight Scenes as the Emperor

Action star Jet Lee had been cast as the Emperor in Disney's live-action Mulan remake, but nobody expects him to do any fighting. For one, the Emperor doesn't do any of that in the original movie, and Li himself is already in his late 50s. What's interesting though, is that Li is still expected to do action.

Talking to Empire (via Fandom), producer Jason Reed teased, "Jet Li is one of the greatest Wushu masters of all time. The Emperor does not just sit on the throne and read scrolls in our movie."

We don't know where we can expect the Emperor to have a fight scene in the film, but it's possible it could be some part of a flashback. Maybe when he's abducted by the villains, he can fight for a bit, before being bested; and that's where Mulan comes in to save him.

The release of Disney's Mulan had been mired with controversy. Besides all the hate that's followed with all the big decisions like removing the music and Mushu the dragon, main actress Liu Yifei had found herself in the spotlight of internet scrutiny when she made comments supporting the police during the protests in Hong Kong. What's more, it was then revealed a few months later that Liu was forced to make those comments by the government. Seeing that China is basically the king of censorship, it's a very believable story.

Controversy or not, Disney is pushing forward with their live-action Mulan. Let's just hope it isn't as bad as some people are already thinking it is.

To save her ailing father from serving in the Imperial Army, a fearless young woman disguises herself as a man to battle northern invaders in China.

Mulan hits theaters March 25.
