Mulan Currently Tracking for an $80 Million Opening Despite COVID-19 Concerns

The novel coronavirus might be threatening to affect the box office as COVID-19 continues to spread around the globe, but it looks like the disease won't be doing too much damage against Disney's live-action remake of Mulan.

According to a report by The Wrap,Mulan is currently tracking for a relatively large opening weekend. The film is currently eyeing a weekend haul running up to $80 million and more – a pretty decent number for another live-action remake from Disney.

Disney may need Mulan to reach higher though. The film has to do well at the box office in North America seeing how the live-action adaptation cost about $200 million to make. Disney's live-action adaptations may do well at the box office ( remakes like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King have all earned upwards of $1 billion at the end of their theatrical release), however, analysts are worried that Mulan may eventually be affected by the spread of COVID-19.

Disney might have been hoping that Mulan might do well at the Chinese box office, but the movie might not earn as much as the Mickey Mouse House hopes for with the spread of the novel coronavirus. COVID-19 spreads very easily, transferring from person to person through sprayed cough and sneezes. An individual can catch COVID-19 when they're six feet of a contagious individual and then come into contact with cough droplets.

Seeing how easy it is to catch COVID-19, moviegoers may be deterred from visiting movie houses to see films like Mulan.

Mulan is set to premiere on March 27.
