The supposedly R-rated Mortal Kombat reboot that will have Fatalities for realsies now has a release date. Warner Bros. said during a press release that the Mortal Kombat movie is coming to theaters next year, on January 15, 2021. That's still a long time away but should give the film enough time to be a well-done piece of entertainment and not just a lame tie-in to an awesome video game franchise.
Mortal Kombat essentially has one year to get its cast, shoot everything, edit the movie, and prepare for reshoots. Granted, shooting a whole movie takes about three to four months, maybe less if the work is efficient/lazy but if the director has a clear vision and the actors do what is asked of them, the release date is far from a problem. Let's just hope this is a good movie.
We know iconic characters like Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and more are in the film, which has a lot of fans excited. Knowing that they might perform their brutal attacks and Fatalities is easily the main appeal of this movie and it will probably be brutal so here's hoping they get that R rating.
I know there are people who love the original Mortal Kombat movie but they do so for ironic/nostalgic reasons. If the producers and writers take notes from the excellent stories NetherRealm Studio has made for the most recent games, we'll be fine.
