Mortal Kombat Casts Dark Knight and Avengers: Endgame Actors for Shang Tsung and Scorpion

New Line continues to build its cast for Mortal Kombat, and after finding Sonya and Kano, the movie has finally cast classic character Scorpion, and who is likely the main villain—Shang Tsung.

According to Variety, Mortal Kombat has cast Hiroyuki Sanada (Westworld, Avengers: Endgame) as Scorpion, and Chin Han (The Dark Knight) as he soul-stealing Shang Tsung. No further details have been revealed about the characters, but I expect both to have some significant roles in the film.

Sanada, for one, is an accomplished swordsman and action man, so I expect him to have quite the bout with the film's Sub-Zero. I don't really know much about Han's fighting skills, but seeing that Shang Tsung is a shapeshifting wizard, I can expect him to just act out Tsung in a chair, and do some light punches and kicks here and there.

The film has already assembled a cast which includes Joe Taslin (Sub-Zero), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Tadanobu Asano (Raiden), Mehcad Brooks (Jax Bridges), and Sisi Stringer (Mileena).

Deadpool 2 actor Lewis Tan has also been cast in the film, but it's yet to be revealed who he's playing. If anything, he could be Johnny Cage, and the film decided to hold back on the reveal in fear of the backlash (Tan is Asian-American while Johnny in the franchise has always been Caucasian). Of course, there's also a chance that he's Kung Lao.

With this many characters, I would think that Mortal Kombat should just be a high-budget series, but if the film is going to embrace the silliness of the early games, then I'm all up for it.

Catch Mortal Kombat when it hits theaters on March 5, 2021.
