Moon Knight Almost Had Echo as the Love Interest

One of the main standouts of the Moon Knight series is May Calamaway's portrayal of Layla El-Faouly, Marc Spector's wife who is also an archeologist and adventurer. However, before the character was conceived, she wasn't originally supposed to be the titular hero's love interest.

Per TVLine, during an interview with the Ringerverse's House of R podcast, Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater revealed that Layla wasn't supposed to be the love interest of Marc Spector in the series. It was originally going to be Echo, who eventually made her debut in Hawkeye.

"At the time, Echo was go to be our love interest, solely based on the fact that they knew Marvel liked the character of Echo and was trying to find a show to put her in," Slater said. While they were involved romantically in the comics, he realized, "She didn't work at all for the story we were telling."

Fortunately, Marvel Studios was also in agreement with the decision. "They were like, ‘You know what, we’ve got this Hawkeye show and we feel like she would fit in a lot better there," he added. "And we were like, ‘Oh, thank God.'"

In retrospect, it is jarring to think of Echo as the love interest of Marc Spector in the series even though it would have made sense since they were an item in the comics. In the end, we can all agree that they made the right choice of Layla as Marc's wife given the way they wrote the character as well as Echo making her appearance instead of Hawkeye where she really shined more as a fighter.

With only one episode left, there's still one important question that they have to address regarding Layla's connection to the overall mystery of the series. Is the whole asylum revelation actually real? In addition to that, is Layla really the wife of Marc or just another patient in the asylum? Fortunately, we only need to wait a few more days for the answer.
