Michelle Obama Says She Couldn't Stand Her Husband Barack Obama For A Decade

In a conversation with Revolt TV earlier this month, Michelle shared some of the things she went through in her marriage. Apparently, their union wasn't a bed of roses.

"People think I'm being catty by saying this — it's like, there were 10 years where I couldn't stand my husband," she said, People reported. "And guess when it happened? When those kids were little."

Michelle explained to moderator Angie Martinez and fellow panellists Kelly Rowland, H.E.R., Winnie Harlow and Tina Knowles-Lawson that it happened when their children were young, and his political career was ascending because she was left to primarily tend their household and look after their daughters, Sasha and Malia. The arrangement wasn't easy to accept for the American attorney, writer and orator.

"And for 10 years while we're trying to build our careers and, you know, worrying about school and who's doing what and what, I was like, 'Ugh, this isn't even,' The Light We Carry author shared. "And guess what? Marriage isn't 50/50, ever, ever."

"There are times I'm 70, he's 30. There are times he's 60, 40, but guess what? 10 years — we've been married 30. I would take 10 bad years over 30 — it's just how you look at it. And people give up . . . 'Five years; I can't take it.'"

Michelle Obama Shares Secret To Her Strong Marriage With Husband Barack Obama

It wasn't the first time Michelle opened up about her marriage to the former president. In one episode of Michelle Obama Podcast with Conan O'Brien in September 2020, she also spoke about the tough times in their marriage when they couldn't stand each other.

"There were times that I wanted to push Barack out of the window," Michelle joked as quoted by Us Weekly. "And I say that because it's like, you've got to know the feelings will be intense. But that doesn't mean you quit. And these periods can last a long time. They can last years."

"Young couples, they face these challenges and they’re ready to give up because they think they’re broken. … If that breaks a marriage, then Barack and I have been broken off and on throughout our marriage, but we have a very strong marriage. And if I had given up on it, if I had walked away from it in those tough times, then I would’ve missed all the beauty that was there as well.”

She added that Barack's presidency was the "ultimate test" in their marriage. She acknowledged that "marriage of equals" was always challenging because being married to the commander-in-chief and being the first lady meant she was only second to him.

"The commander in chief takes precedent," she added.
