Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made their final royal engagements two years ago. However, according to a royal expert, the Duchess of Sussex sent a secret message during her last appearance as a working royal through her ensemble.

Meghan Markle Allegedly Sending A Message About Complicated Relationship During Final Royal Engagement

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were visibly missing on Monday's Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey. However, in 2020, they made their final royal engagement at the same event.

Meghan Markle arrived wearing a green dress designed by Emilia Wickstead. Her dress features a cape and she wore a matching beret and nude heels for her final royal duty.

However, according to royal expert Christine Ross, who edits the blog Meghan's Mirror, Markle sent a secret message about a "complicated" relationship she had with the designer with her choice of outfit.

"One of the most iconic looks is going to be her green Emilia Wickstead cape dress," Ross said on Mirror's royal podcast Pod Save the Queen (via Express). "That cape blowing in the wind as she walked into the church and then walked out of the church, which was such an emotional moment for so many people as it was their last formal engagement as royals. That green dress will stand out in history books I think."

Ross said that Marke and Wickstead had a complicated relationship after the latter said her wedding dress was "simple." Ross stressed that the designer didn't say anything negative, but her comment was taken out of context.

"People thought Emilia Wickstead had really wronged Meghan, and it turned out that Emilia Wickstead hadn't wrong Meghan, it was a pull quote," she explained. "Maybe a month or so later Meghan actually wore a custom Emilia Wickstead dress, and that situation shows the power of Meghan's fashion choices.

"She was able to say with this fashion choice, 'Emilia Wickstead and I are great.' We're on great terms, that whole thing was a huge misunderstanding and look at the lovely dress she designed for me.'"

Backstory Of Meghan Markle And Emilia Wickstead's Complicated Relationship

There were reports that Wickstead allegedly claimed Markle's royal wedding dress was a copy of one of her designs. There was reportedly a striking resemblance between the gown she designed and the one Markle wore on her big day, which was designed by Givenchy's Clare Waight Keller based on a side-by-side photo of the two dresses.

"Her dress is identical to one of our dresses. Apparently, a lot of commentators were saying, 'It's an Emilia Wickstead dress," Wickstead wrote on Twitter.

She also seemingly criticized the fitting of Markle's gown. "If you choose a simple design, the fit should be perfect. Her wedding dress was quite loose," the New Zealander designer added.

Wickstead received intense backlash for her tweets that her Twitter account was suspended at the time. The designer released a statement on Instagram to clear the air. She denied saying Markle's wedding gown was a copy of her design.

"I am extremely saddened by commentary that has appeared in the press and on-line over the past few days," she wrote. "Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Sussex looked absolutely beautiful on her wedding day and I have the utmost admirable and respect for her."

Wickstead continued, "I do not think that her wedding dress was a copy of any of our designs. I have the greatest respect for Clare Waight Keller and the House of Givenchy - a huge source of inspiration to me."

She ended her post by giving her well-wishes to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex saying, she hoped they would have a "wonderful, happy and love-filled life together."
