Several Meetings Took Place Before Prince Harry, Meghan Markle's Megxit

In the book Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown, author Valentine Low spoke to a palace courtier who made some remarks about Meghan Markle after she and Prince Harry announced their Megxit.

Prior to the announcement, Queen Elizabeth ordered the couple to attend a summit in Sandringham, where they were supposed to talk about solutions on how they could move forward. The initial discussions took place at the Clarence House, and the secretaries of all four households were there.

A second meeting was later held at Buckingham Palace. And Prince William's private secretary, Simon Case, spoke with both sides. Five different scenarios were presented wherein Prince Harry and Markle could still work as part-time royals while living in the United States.

"I think Meghan thought she was going to be the Beyoncé of the UK. Being part of the royal family would give her that kudos. Whereas what she discovered was that there were so many rules that were so ridiculous that she couldn't even do the things that she could do as a private individual, which is tough," the palace insider said (via Daily Mail).

Another source acknowledged that Markle struggled to merge her world as a royal and as a celebrity because this was an impossible task. So, in the end, they realized that the Duchess of Sussex did not fit the model of a working royal, and the palace couldn't accept who she wanted to be.

"There was a very clear view: you can't be in and out. And if you've got such clarity of view, it's very difficult to say, 'Why don't we go 10 percent this way instead of 20 percent?" Low wrote.
