Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's celebrity status will reportedly make it difficult for them to have a "fair trial" in Samantha Markle's defamation case against them. Markle's lawyer believed the case should be rejected.
Meghan Markle, Prince Harry's Celebrity Status Will Affect Samantha Markle's Lawsuit?
Samantha is suing her half-sister for the alleged lies she shared in her and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021. Legal expert Shawn Breywer, owner of The Hive Law, weighed in on the legal battle Samantha brought against the Duchess of Sussex.
"Public opinion and the celebrity status of the parties involved can often influence the outcome of a trial," Breyer told Express.
"This can make it difficult to have a fair trial, as jurors may be swayed by the public perception of the individuals involved. For example, in high-profile cases involving celebrities, the media coverage can be intense and create a biased public opinion. This can lead to jurors forming an opinion about the case before it even reaches the courtroom, making it harder for them to remain impartial."
The legal expert added that the Sussexes' celebrity status could attract more attention from the media and create more pressure on the judge who will handle the case and the jury who will deliver the verdict.
"Ultimately, the ability to have a fair trial in such cases depends on the impartiality and integrity of the judicial system."
Meghan Markle's Lawyer Believes Samantha's Case Should Be Rejected
Markle's lawyer, Michael J. Kump, argued that Samantha's case had no merit. In his filing, the attorney said the feelings about their childhood are "more personal and subjective" after Samantha alleged that Markle's claim she grew up in virtual poverty was a lie.
Kump also alleged that Samantha "completely ignored" the context in which Markle discussed she grew up as an only child.
"The lawsuit was filed by Samantha claiming among other things that Meghan caused emotional distress to their father through acts of conspiracy and negligence," he explained.

"Regardless of the merits of these claims, which appear slim at best, American law generally protects aspiring public figures from defamatory claims by terminated family members. The court system does this to protect people from unwarranted lawsuits used as leverage in an attempt to extort money or pursue vendettas against individuals with large disposable incomes. Therefore, it is likely that the claim brought by Samantha will be rejected."
