Meghan Markle and Prince Harry close a $25 million deal with Spotify, but they haven't uploaded fresh content. A media lawyer said maybe Spotify overestimated the royal couple's popularity, but it can still withdraw from their contract.

Meghan Markle And Prince Harry Haven't Uploaded New Spotify Content

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex wanted to be financially independent from the royal family. When they moved to the United States and settled in California, they didn't have a hard time closing multi-million deals.

They signed a $25 million deal with Spotify to produce inspirational stories that will uplift the listeners. In December 2020, the royal couple released their first episode where they featured motivational stories from various celebrities, including Stacey Abrams, Brené Brown, Deepak Chopra, James Corden, Sir Elton John, Naomi Osaka, Tyler Perry and more.

However, since then, they haven't uploaded fresh content. So, many are wondering what happens to the deal.

"Spotify was delighted when they signed the couple, but the lack of content has mystified them," a source told The Sun. "Particularly as they seem to have no problem producing content for other platforms."

Spotify Could Withdraw From $25 Million Deal With Prince Harry And Meghan Markle

Media lawyer Ian Penman weighed in on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's deal with Spotify. He speculated that the company might withdraw due to the royal couple's lack of popularity.

"It would not be an unfair assumption that perhaps their popularity was not as great as maybe they or indeed Spotify initially felt," he told Express. "I think you could draw a conclusion that if [Spotify] haven't exercised the option on the next episode of the podcast, then maybe they did not have the popularity that either Meghan and Harry expected or indeed Spotify anticipated."

He added that the deal probably covered different products, probably their first product was the podcast. And the royal couple may have different options. He noted that all options are in Spotify's favor, not in the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's. And if they carry out all the options, then Spotify will spend the total agreed amount.

If the Sussexes have no fresh content, it doesn't mean that Spotify is losing money.

"So, have they lost any money today? Probably, not a penny," he added.
