Medical Residents Express Disdain on The Last of Us Controversial Finale

The Last of Us showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin may have initially taken away the breaths of viewers on how realistic the cordyceps virus outbreak could easily exist amid the pandemic, however, medical residents are taking to heart the poor ethical practice of what The Last of Us finale had shown.

It is worth mentioning that The Last of Us Episode 9 had always been controversial, given that it was divisive amongst video gamers when it came to whether or not Joel made the right choice in saving Ellie over potentially saving the lives of humanity. Apart from this debate in the fandom, though, medical residents took to r/Residency subreddit their disdain upon watching the ethics of the Firefly Doctors operating on an unconscious minor without their consent.

“After watching The Last of Us finale, did anyone else do the math that the doctor performing the surgery was probably a resident when cordyceps took over? Like, he’s not more than 50, so he was no more than 30,” one user posted.

Another chimed in, saying, “Also, is it ethical to perform a nonsurvival surgery on a minor to save mankind from cordyceps? Why not a spinal tap and see if it grows cordyceps and use that for your vaccine?”

Given the outrage of the reddit users over how the members of the Fireflies poorly handled the situation, in the Naughty Dog video game, the decision had always beena hot topic in defending Joel’s decision on inflicting massacre on every person he came across in that building.

Especially with the fact that since the cordyceps outbreak practically got rid of professionally trained Doctors who could have attempted at it, instead, it was highly unlikely that losing Ellie would actually deal a good future for humanity.

Many non-medical residents also believe that the few residents involved in the finale had little to no evidence and experience in conjuring up a vaccine, which would render the invasive act void of taking any responsibility for the consequences of killing one child in an attempt of surviving.

Unfortunately, the consequences only lead to haunt Joel up to The Last of Us Season 2.

You can now watch all nine episodes of The Last of Us available to stream on HBO Max.
