Friends alum Matthew Perry made a big revelation about him and Jennifer Aniston in his new memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. As his character Chandler Bing in the hit series ended up with Monica Geller (Courteney Cox), he liked Aniston more in real life. However, his attempt to ask her out didn’t go as expected.
Matthew Perry’s Awkward Call with Jennifer Aniston
Perry and Aniston met through mutual acquaintances three years before they worked together on the NBC series.
In the excerpt from the book published by The Times, he detailed how he started to like Brad Pitt’s ex-wife.
It all started when he and the rest of Friends’ main cast met for the first time—except for him and Aniston.
“I was immediately taken by her (how could I not be?) and liked her, and I got the sense she was intrigued too – maybe it was going to be something,” he wrote.
At the time, the now-53-year-old star had two jobs: Haywire and a sitcom. So, he called Aniston to tell her about it.
“You’re the first person I wanted to tell this to,” he told her. However, he felt it wasn’t a good idea, and he made it even worse when he asked her out.

“I could feel ice forming through the phone,” he continued. “Looking back, it was clear that this made her think I liked her too much or in the wrong kind of way… and I only compounded the error by then asking her out.”
Jennifer Aniston Turned Down Matthew Perry
Aniston turned down Perry’s offer, which made going out with The Morning Show star even more difficult. But she still tried to be nice by telling him she would love it if they could be friends.
“I compounded the compound by blurting, ‘We can’t be friends!’” he added.
Despite Aniston’s refusal, the two turned out to be good friends and developed a strong bond.

“Even though I was still attracted to her and thought she was so great, that first day we were able to sail right past the past and focus on the fact that we had both gotten the best job Hollywood had to offer,” Perry stated.
Perry worked together for 10 years, from when Friends started in 1994 until it ended in 2004.
