The singer’s self-titled debut album was dropped in June 1990. Though the sales started slow, it eventually grew big and became a certified 9X platinum in the U.S. alone, with more than 15 million copies sold worldwide.
It topped the music charts and even earned her a Grammy for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
After a year, she dropped Emotions in 1991 to enormous success. It was followed by her third album, Music Box, in 1993, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time with 28 million copies sold.

Her Christmas album, Merry Christmas, was also a success, and one of its most notable songs was “All I Want for Christmas is You.” It has become one of the best-selling and most profitable singles of all time, even earning her royalties, with 16 million global sales and continuously counting.
She reportedly gets $600,000 a year in royalties, along with producer Walter Afanasieff. To date, it has generated $60 million in gross royalties.
Mariah Carey’s Career Resurgence
After having a big issue with Virgin Records, Mariah Carey has experienced a career resurgence after signing a 24-million, five-album deal with Island Records.
Her biggest hit came in 2005 with “The Emancipation of Mimi,” selling 10 million copies worldwide.
She then released one album under Def Jam, and she’s now with Epic Records
