Johnny Depp has hired a new attorney, Kathleen Zellner, who is best known for her work on Netflix's Making A Murderer documentary, to represent him in his ongoing court battle with his ex-wife, Aquaman star Amber Heard.

Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard

For years, the Academy Award-nominated actor has been locked in a legal dispute with Heard. They met on the set of The Rum Diary in 2011 and married in 2015. Heard filed for divorce a year later, accusing Depp of domestic abuse.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor's lawyers have denied all allegations of abuse, alleging Heard was the alleged abuser in the relationship.

In recent years, Depp has been involved in a number of legal battles with Heard, some of which are still ongoing. Depp lost a libel lawsuit against The Sun that called him a "wife-beater" in November of 2020.

That verdict hinged on Heard's testimony. In Virginia, a defamation claim against Heard is now proceeding and is set to go to trial later this year.

Who is Making A Murderer’s Kathleen Zellner?

Zellner has an outstanding legal résumé that includes over 30 years of defending people who have been wrongfully accused of crimes and seeking to overturn wrongful convictions, as fans of Netflix's hit true-crime documentary series Making A Murderer know.

During the second season of the program, Zellner played the post-conviction attorney for Steven Avery, a man falsely accused of sexual assault and attempted murder. Now that she's in Depp's corner, the full extent of the actor's legal fate remains unknown.

Zellner said in a statement to PageSix that she is thrilled to be joining Depp's "dream team" of lawyers, and she cites her experience of defending persons who have been wrongfully accused, obviously linking the allegations of abuse against Depp with her previous cases.

It's unclear how much Zellner will impact Depp's efforts to clear his name of any crime. While he won't be able to appeal the court's ruling on The Sun's claims, Depp is currently suing Heard for a libelous Washington Post op-ed in which she claims to have been a victim of domestic violence.
