Why Magnum P.I. Season 5 wasn’t greenlit

As fans expressed their frustration with the lack of a Magnum P.I. Season 5, many asked why CBS would cancel what appeared to be a very popular show.

According to Deadline, the network and Universal Television were unable to reach a deal on Magnum P.I. Season 5. CBS also has a number of promising pilots in the works this season, which may have contributed to the show's demise.

What happened in the Magnum P.I. Season 4 finale?

The Season 4 finale of Magnum P.I. aired on May 6. According to a report from TVLine, that episode was the procedural's swan song now that CBS has canceled it.

This season, it averaged 7.4 million viewers, putting it towards the top of the network's drama program in terms of ratings. Magnum P.I. was a reboot of Tom Selleck's iconic 1980s series.

Higgins (Perdita Weeks) finally admitted her affections for Magnum (Jay Hernandez) in Close to Home. The pair ultimately locked lips for the first time at the end of the show. Its unfortunate fans will not be able to find out what happens next for Magnum and Higgins in Magnum P.I. Season 5.

Turns out Jay Hernandez had been wrong all along

Despite the fact that CBS had already renewed other primetime dramas such as S.W.A.T., Blue Bloods, The Equalizer, and the whole FBI and NCIS franchises, Magnum P.I. fans were left hanging as the season (now series) finale approached. Nonetheless, series star Hernandez felt sure that Magnum P.I. Season 5 was on the way.

“It’s solid,” he told TVLine in April. “The numbers are great, it travels well internationally…. So yeah, I think we’re in good shape. And you know what, they’re happy with the show. They loved this season.”

Loyal fans were quick to express their support for the now-canceled show. Many people started tweeting using the hashtag #SaveMagnumPI, with some pleading with Netflix or another network to intervene and save the show.
