Lovecraft Country Set Was Apparently 'Toxic' and 'Hostile,' Claims New Book

Despite the fact that Lovecraft Country, a genre-bending period drama that aired its Season 1 finale in October 2020, was originally labeled as a "limited series," it was unexpected to see the popular series come to such an abrupt end. This is especially true given the fact that Season 2 appeared to be all but confirmed at one point.

Lovecraft Country Writers: Disgruntled?

Lovecraft Country was canceled, according to author James Andrew Miller's new HBO oral history Tinderbox: HBO's Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers, because Misha Green, the showrunner, created a "toxic" and "hostile" work environment, which made other writers unwilling to work with her. Miller elaborated on the allegations in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting the book.

"I had several sources within HBO and elsewhere — people who worked on the show and people who represented people on the show — who said the environment on the show was not a healthy one,” Miller told the outlet.

The author continued, "Not only is it losing a show that was such an outlier in terms of what it was trying to say, but then to have a Black showrunner — and a female Black showrunner — is not something that happens every day, and people were incredibly excited about that," he told THR.

Green Declines to Comment

Green, who has now signed a multi-year contract with Apple, has declined to comment on the story. She's already hinted at what Lovecraft Country season 2 would have looked like if it had gone forward.

Green thanked fans for expressing their wish for the show to return and said that the show would have featured zombies and would have been called Lovecraft Country: Supremacy.

HBO has a reputation for being a creator-friendly network, staying with its shows even when they are struggling to find a tone or a large audience. As a result of this and the lack of specific reasons for the cancellation, speculation about what happened behind the scenes have sprung up quickly.

Miller's book attempts to capture the highs and lows of the Home Box Office network's history over the last 49 years. The information in the book, which is available on Amazon, comes from more than 700 interviews with insiders who worked at practically every level of the network.

You can watch all 10 episodes of the first and only season of Lovecraft Country on HBO Max.
