Lord of the Rings Star Ian Holm Dies at 88

Ian Holm, a veteran British actor who has an incredible range having played everything from androids to hobbits, has passed away in London at age 88.

Holm's agent confirmed the news to The Guardian. "It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88," they said. "He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer." It was noted that Holm's illness was Parkinson's related, adding that the "charming, kind and ferociously talented" actor will be missed "hugely."

The beloved actor's final days were actually documented in a series of pastel portraits by Sophie de Stempel, his wife.

Known for his performances in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Hobbit movies, Chariots of Fire, and Alien, there's no doubt that Holm was an instantly recognizable face in the industry.

Holm's big-screen resume also included The Fixer, Oh! What a Lovely War, Mary Queen of Scots, Juggernaut, Greystoke — The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, Dreamchild, Henry V, Hamlet, Naked Lunch, The Madness of King George,A Life Less Ordinary, Joe Gould's Secret, The Aviator, and Strangers With Candy. He also voiced the villainous chef Skinner in Ratatouille.

Holm also worked regularly on British television series such as The Borrowers, Bells, Mr. and Mrs. Edgehill, We the Accused, and Game Set and Match.
