Liam Neeson Debunks Too Many Star Wars Spinoffs Will Hurt the Franchise

Let’s face it. Dabbling too much with the same show or film with spinoffs and sequels more often than not inevitably hurts the franchise, especially when the main storyline ends on the first try. Obi-Wan Kenobi star Liam Neeson predicts this is what Star Wars is going to have to face, eventually.

In the case of Star Wars, The Force Awakens, The Mandalorian, and Andor are some of the big successful shows that pushed the force forward. However, films such as Solo and The Rise of Skywalker were outrightly a 'big miss' by Star Wars standards, and the possibility of repeating this mistake could happen again if the billion-dollar franchise fails to counter this with other novel ideas.

“There’s so many spin offs of Star Wars,” Neeson told during his recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live! alongside Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star Paul Rudd, “It’s diluting to me and it’s taken away the mystery and the magic in a weird way.”

Neeson’s hot take is no stranger when it comes to criticizing franchises these days and it’s clear how the Taken actor isn’t thrilled about Star Wars losing its magic. However, his take is not exactly new, either.

Fans are well aware of what they want to see in their favorite franchises, and yet somehow, these creators don't seem to see when spinoffs and sequels need to stop. As of now, Marvel Studios is taking precaution on halting a couple of projects for Marvel Phase 5 to lessen the likelihood of increasing moviegoers’ and MCU fans’ superhero fatigue.

However, this is not to say that Star Wars shows such as The Mandalorian and Andor weren’t devoid of enriching and expanding the Star Wars Universe. It will be up to Lucasfilm and Disney+ how they could possibly regain the ‘magic and mystery’ of the franchise.

Meanwhile, The Mandalorian Season 3 is set to hit Disney+ on March 1, 2023.
