These days, it's hard to believe that Star Wars was once on hiatus. Following the release of Revenge of the Sith in 2004, things went quiet on the galactic front, at least until 2008's long-running animated series The Clone Wars. But it wasn't until 2015 that the Force truly awakened, and it hasn't stopped since, with Disney and Lucasfilm churning out a new sequel trilogy, two spin-off movies, The Mandalorian, and animated shows Rebels and The Bad Batch.

The same goes for game consoles too – with the two Battlefront titles and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order being the most notable. And, as is the case with Star Wars in TV and film, there are also upcoming games, such as VR experience Star Wars: Tales from Galaxy's Edge – Last Call, an open-world Star Wars game from Ubisoft, and now, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which got its first official trailer yesterday, breaking the internet into tiny little pieces.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Trailer

Last year, we got a teaser trailer for the new game – which was a bit like buying a Star WarsLEGO set with several pieces missing. Nevertheless, it evoked waves of nostalgia (probably helped by the fact it used the same score from The Rise of Skywalker final trailer – which, say what you will about the film, was just incredible). Now, in true LEGO style, the brand-new trailer delivers buckets of whimsical Star Wars parody that isn't without plenty of nostalgic charm, either.

The new trailer emerged during Gamescom Opening Night Live, and as you can see, features a ton of footage. But perhaps one of the most impressive things about the trailer is the fact you can't really tell the difference between gameplay and cutscene – the graphics are gorgeous and every frame is simply stunning. And though the Force is strong with the humor - as is always the case with LEGO - there's also some pretty serious nostalgia going on here too, and it's easy to forget you're watching a whistle-stop tour of the epic Skywalker Saga in brick-form.

So, what's the game about? Well, the clue's in the title - LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and you won't need an instruction manual to figure out how this works. In other words, you'll be able to play through all nine Episodes in the Skywalker Saga (although we doubt you'll be able to rebuild the sequel trilogy). This means you'll be able to relive iconic moments, settings, battles, and characters that span all three trilogies, including the Battle of Geonosis, Rey's training with Luke Skywalker on Ahch-To, Luke's training on Dagobah, the Clone Wars, and so much more.

It has also been confirmed that players will be able to start at 'any point' throughout the saga (which is actually pretty consistent with the non-chronological order of the films). In a recent interview with StarWars.com, head of the production and strategic director at TT Games Jonathan Smith, explained, "Freedom of choice is a really important principle for us! We love stories and storytelling; but we also feel, both as gamers ourselves and with particular concern for young players driven to experimentation and change, that stories exist to be played with, however, the player wants."

The action-packed trailer, which utilizes the gorgeous score from The Force Awakens trailer, shows a montage of recreated scenes that span the nine films: we see Darth Maul readying his lightsaber for battle with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan; Yoda being a backpack to Luke while he runs around on Dagobah; the underwater scene on Naboo from The Phantom Menace; galactic dogfights,dewback-riding on Tatooine, and tauntaun-riding on Hoth. This all promises some truly varied gameplay, which will also include hyperspace travel, also teased in the trailer alongside a star chart!

With over 20 planets to unlock, as well as 500 playable characters (while it sounds like the creators have looked only to the nine films, here's to hoping we'll get to play other iconic characters such as Ahsoka Tano, Grogu, and Omega - we'll even take Jar Jar), LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is set to be the biggest LEGO Star Wars game ever built. And if all that isn't enough to leave you excited for the game, then an Ewok doing a backflip in the trailer probably will. And who knows - the game might even help put the fanbase back together after the sequel trilogy.

The game will also receive the LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker SagaDeluxe Edition, in addition to the regular version. The Deluxe version will feature a Character Collection bundle and six DLC character packs, while in-store purchases will also include a Luke Skywalker Minifigure. The game's graphic-themed slipcover will also allow buyers to remove Darth Vader's helmet, revealing Anakin underneath.

To celebrate the release of the game, LEGO has also unveiled brand-new sets that depict scenes from the Skywalker Saga. These include a LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar, 501st Legion Clone Troopers, Anakin's Jedi Interceptor, Armored Assault Tank, Knights of Ren Transport Ship, and an AT-AT.

StarWars.com recently interviewed two of the game's creators, who spoke in great length about some of the game's features, and the inspiration they drew from all nine films in the Skywalker Saga.

The game is the latest in a long line of announcements for upcoming new Star Wars media, which include TV shows such as Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, The Mandalorian Season 3, The Book of Boba Fett, Star Wars: Visions, and The Bad Batch Season 2, as well as upcoming movies Rogue Squadrons, an untitled project from Taika Waititi and another from Kevin Feige.

Meanwhile, all things Star Wars are currently streaming on Disney+.
