Lego Games Developer Tried (and Failed) to Make a Lord of the Rings Video Game

Believe it or not, Lord of the Rings has had a fairly successful video game career in recent years. The movie tie-in games of The Two Towers and Return of the King were excellent, fans enjoyed Lego Lord of the Rings and Lego The Hobbit, and the recent Middle Earth series of titles have garnered critical acclaim. Interestingly enough, Traveller's Tales, who are known for the Lego video games, tried pitching a non-Lego Lord of the Rings game to capitalize on The Hobbit coming out.

Jon Burton posted a video on his GameHut YouTube channel where he shows off footage from this canceled video game. This Lord of the Rings video game would have recreated a number of iconic scenes from the acclaimed film trilogy, with Frodo, Gandalf, and Aragorn confirmed as some of the playable characters. To be honest, this game looks really good and it's a shame that it wasn't given the green light.

Burton asked fans if they want to see a full playthrough of this title and it looks like we're going to see it, which should be great. It's always sad seeing cool games like this not come into fruition but being able to see more gameplay is something we can take. Hopefully, with a game based on Gollum coming out, we get a proper LOTR title like this in the near future.

If you're in the mood for some Middle Earth in your gaming, pick up Shadow of Mordor or Shadow of War on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
