Everyone's favorite blue, anthropomorphic hedgehog is heading back for the big screen next year, two years after the original Sonic The Hedgehog movie, which was such a success it became the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.

That film was also one of the last to hit theaters before the pandemic began, and we can't help but get the warm and fuzzies with this new trailer. Not only is it yet another movie based on the hugely popular retro video game franchise, but it now also reminds us of a time when things weren't so weird!

Check out the brand-new trailer below, which sees the titular hero (or 'Blue Blur' as he's affectionately known by diehard Sonic fans) join forces with a beloved character from the video games, and face-off against another fan-favorite:

The trailer opens to the signature sound of Sonic's iconic gold rings being snatched up, and we see the star filling his time by being a superhero - well, trying at least. James Marsden, who returns as Sonic's human friend Tom Wachowski, tells Sonic that he's being "reckless" and that "he's still just a kid", before adding that "his time will come."

And then we see Jim Carrey's evil Dr. Robotnik return to the fold, this time rocking the bald look from the video games (although there's no fat-suit - something Carrey did previously express a desire to wear in this film). Robotnik is reunited with his sidekick Agent Stone (with Lee Majdoub reprising the role). "I've discovered the source of my ultimate power," Robotnik tells him.

We then meet Tails (voiced by Colleen Shaughnessy), who appears at the end of the first movie to help Sonic. This movie will see the pair unite against a common foe - Dr. Robotnik. But he isn't the only threat, as we also get to see Knuckles - a fan-favorite character from the games - who appears to be working for Robotnik. "Do I look like I need your power?" he asks Sonic.

Knuckles is voiced by none other than Idris Elba (who recently explained that he wouldn't be giving Knuckles a sexy voice, which we can only assume is in reference to all the other suave characters Elba is known to play). Just like in the video games, he's making his first appearance as a villain, having been persuaded by Robotnik to battle it out with Sonic.

The trailer is bursting with action from start to finish, not unlike a video game - there's lots of airborne action this time around, with Sonic and Tails flying a red bi-plane which they use to evade missiles (which are undoubtedly being fired by Dr. Robotnik), and the end of the trailer teases what appears to be a showdown between Sonic and Knuckles (or perhaps their first of many encounters).

As for the animation, it all looks pretty awesome, with the Tails and Knuckles designs looking particularly impressive (and on par with Sonic). As such, the quality of animation and design won't be a topic of conversation this time around, something the first trailer for 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog did cause, with its then-poor rendition of the titular character.
