Kirstie Alley, best known for her role as Rebecca Howe on the hit NBC sitcom Cheers, died at 71 after a short battle against cancer.

Kirstie Alley’s Life and Career

Alley started her career in the late 1970s. From the 1980s to the 1990s, she made a number of movies, like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Summer School, Shoot to Kill, Look Who’s Talking and its two sequels, Madhouse, Sibling Rivalry, Village of the Damned, It Takes Two, Deconstruction Harry, For Richer or Poorer, and Drop Dead Gorgeous.

Her breakout role came in the NBC sitcom Cheers, earning her Emmy and Golden Globe Awards.

Come 1997, she did The Last Don and received an Emmy nomination. She then did a fictionalized version of herself on Fat Actress, followed by Kirstie Alley’s Big Life.

She then led the sitcom Veronica’s Closet and joined Dancing with the Stars Season 12, winning second place.

Alley returned to acting in 2013 and did the sitcom Kirstie. She then joined the cast of Scream Queens and became one of the participants in the reality show, Celebrity Big Brother, finishing as a runner-up.

In 2022, she joined The Masked Singer.

Kirstie Alley Dead at 71

The four corners of the entertainment world were surprised by the news of Alley’s death on Monday, December 5.

Her kids, True and Lillie Parker, announced the sad news. In a statement to People, the siblings confirmed her death, caused by cancer.

"We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce, and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered," they jointly said.

"She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead," they continued. "As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother."

They added that their mom’s "zest and passion for life, her children, grandchildren, and her many animals, not to mention her eternal joy of creating, were unparalleled and leave us inspired to live life to the fullest just as she did."

True and Lillie then thanked their late mother’s doctors and nurses at the Moffitt Cancer Center. Later, they expressed their gratitude for Alley’s fans.

"We thank you for your love and prayers and ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time,” they concluded.
