A King Kong live-action series is in early development for Disney+ according to Deadline. The new project surrounding the giant ape is being produced by Disney Branded Television and Aquaman director James Wan's production company Atomic Monster. It also marks the first live-action series centering on the character.
The series is described as "a serialized action-adventure drama that brings the classic monster story into the modern age, with a return to Skull Island and the dawn of a new Kong. The series will explore the mythology of King Kong’s origin story and the supernatural mysteries of his home."
Paper Girls creator Stephen Folsom is writing the series and will serve as executive producer alongside Wan, Michael Clear, Rob Hackett, Dannie Festa, and Marc Manus. It is also based on Merian C. Cooper's original books and the new novelizations by Joe DeVito.
The project is not related to Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse franchise, which is behind the giant ape's latest big-screen iterations Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong. A sequel for the latter is currently filming in Australia although it hasn't been confirmed whether Kong will have a big part in it.
The character of King Kong has been a presence on the big screen for almost 90 years starting with the infamous 1933 film. There were also remakes that were made in 1976 and in 2005 directed by Peter Jackson before he became part of the MonsterVerse franchise where he became one of its staples.
Considering that the project is still in early development, it is very likely that it will take a few years before we'll see it come to fruition. Nevertheless, it is exciting to hear that a new take on King Kong is coming to our screens and it's interesting to see how they'll be able to bring his story into a TV series format.
