A lot of fans have been clamoring to see Keanu Reeves star in a superhero project without realizing that he once headlined his own comic book film, long before franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe were established. Some may have forgotten about it but Reeves starred in 2005's Constantine as the occult detective John Constantine but the film bombed at the box office and received generally unfavorable reviews.

Over the years though, Constantine has gained a cult-like following with many fans growing to appreciate Keanu's take on the character. While his version of the beloved comic book character was far from being comic-accurate, it was still a pretty decent take and quite frankly, introduced a lot of casual fans to the character.

Now, 16 years after playing Constantine, Reeves is once again expressing his desire to play the character. In a new Esquire feature, the star of the John Wick and The Matrix franchises was asked whether he'd be down to reprise the role, and turns out, his feelings about playing the character haven't changed one bit. He said: "I love playing Constantine. John Constantine. I've played a lot of Johns. How many Johns have I played? I don't even know. I think it's over ten. But anyway, I'd love to have the chance to play Constantine again."

I'm not entirely sure how Keanu's version of Constantine would fit into the current DC Extended Universe continuity but one thing's for certain, the door will always be open for him to make his return as Constantine. If anything, it could serve as his redemption story after the original film failed to hit the mark on some fans and critics.

Meanwhile, Keanu Reeves stars in The Matrix Resurrections, hitting cinemas on December 22, 2021.
