It goes without saying that the Star Wars franchise has been riding a huge wave of momentum and renewed popularity thanks to the success of its streaming shows like The Mandalorian and Andor. However, the same thing can't be said about its stagnant movie slate that has been plaguing Lucasfilm for a couple of years now.

The production company already has film projects lined up for Star Wars but according to a new report, Kathleen Kennedy's future as Lucasfilm chief is still shrouded in uncertainty.

Insider Jeff Sneider of The Hot Mic claims that Kennedy's future as Lucasfilm president depends on whether Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's 2025 Star Wars film actually gets released. As it stands, the project which is set following the events of the sequel trilogy is eyeing a December 2025 release.

However, the film has been experiencing major hurdles along the way and most recently, writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson stunned fans with their departure despite being attached to the project for quite some time now. Sneider reports that if the untitled film doesn't get released in Christmas 2025, there's a good chance Kennedy will be stripped of her executive powers.

Kennedy is often regarded as one of the people responsible for the critical failure of the sequel trilogy. Despite generating massive revenue for the production company, the fandom was never pleased with how Episodes VII, VIII, and IX turned out. To be fair, it seemed as though Lucasfilm was more committed than ever to bringing Star Wars back to the big screen but the recent developments aren't showing much promise.
