After James Gunn assumed the post as co-head of DC Studios, his farewell project with Marvel has been long awaited. MCU fans are wondering how the writer-director will put an end to the Guardians' journey with a bang as it will be his last MCU stint. The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is ready to return to the big screen as the final instalment. As Marvel begins to build its new set of heroes and young avengers, old stars will surely be missed in their roles, including Karen Gillan as Nebula.
Gillan's Nebula is one of the most complex and interesting Marvel characters. She is the fierce adopted daughter of Thanos (Josh Brolin) and the sister of Gamora (Zoë Saldaña). Given that the two girls are raised by a Mad Titan, who often forces them to face off against each other in or outside combat, their relationship is complicated. As the actress prepares to leave Nebula behind, she will have a lot to deal with in the third instalment of the saga. She believes that her character’s journey will be compelling and transformative.
“Now we're seeing Nebula post the death of the source of her trauma, Thanos. He's been eliminated from the story, and now we're seeing her character become a little bit of the person that she should have been had that not happened to her," she said to Deadline. The actress explained that Nebula's new idea of bliss is “her new family with the new Guardians and letting love in for the first time, rather than the defence mechanism always triggering. Allowing her to be loved and to love.”
In an interview with Marvel.com last year, Gillan teased a "bittersweet" ending for the beloved space crew. “It was such an amazing experience. I loved working on that movie so much, I'm about to burst. I loved it, it was so good,” she remarked. “I just loved where the character went, I loved working with James again — I'm so glad that he was back with us — it was like the family got reunited.” Gillan continued, “I think we've taken it to a whole new level this time. And you know, there might be, maybe, a feeling of closing out a chapter of sorts, so it's a little bittersweet, in a sense. But I think everybody has upped it for this one.”
