Jumanji: The Video Game Looks Like a Throwback to Bad Movie Games

Nowadays, movie tie-in games are rare and not as frequent, usually relegated to shovelware in the iOS App Store or Google Play. However, every once in a while, a movie game does pop up and looks better than it should like The Lego Movie Videogame or Insomniac Games' Ratchet and Clank, which was both a remake of the original game and a retelling of the film.

Sadly, Jumanji: The Video Game doesn't look like the two games mentioned above. Instead, it looks like one of those mediocre movie games of yore that were frequent in the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube era. While there is still some time before it's eventually released, things don't look too good right now and probably won't for the foreseeable future, unless major changes are made.

Visually, it looks like it's trying to match Fortnite while having beat-em-up gameplay mechanics. That's not a bad combination but the combat looks really sloppy, with the same combos used over and over, while enemies don't react to it well. Also, Fortnite can run on mobile devices so while it might not be an ugly game, it's worth noting that Jumanji looks like it could also be on a mobile device.

I'd be surprised if the reviews of this game can go over a 7 out of 10. It just doesn't look very good. They're likely trying to tie-in to the upcoming sequel Jumanji: The Next Level, which comes out on December 13. They also probably want some of that tie-in money since the first film, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, outperformed and did better than expected.

Jumanji: The Video Game comes out on November 8. Unless major changes are made, you're better off waiting for Pokemon Sword and Shield or Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
