Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Director Explains Why Gojo and Geto's Relationship was Important to the Film

If you watched Jujutsu Kaisen 0 in the past weekend, there's a huge chance you were blown away by the prequel film. The anime movie certainly shone the spotlight on Yuta Okkotsu but it also highlighted the connection between Okkotsu's mentor Satoru Gojo and Gojo's friend Suguru Geto. But why is it so important to explore this relationship? Director Sunghoo Park stated that it was essential to the film.

Sunghoo Park recently spoke to Anime News Network where he opened up about directing the movie. The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 director admitted that they were careful to make sure the film is all about Okkotsu. However, Park also pointed out that it was important that the audience understood Geto's perspective.

"While the story of Okkotsu is the main focus, you will find that Gojo and Geto are also well represented in the story. However, we were also conscious of the fact that the story of Gojo and Geto should not take center stage and get in the way of the story of Okkotsu," he said. "In the latter half of the story, Geto and Okkotsu will directly confront each other because Geto planned the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons but in order to depict that scene, I first had to make sure that the audience understood Geto's background."

Park then admitted that he wanted the two characters to come into the picture naturally.

"What I had kept strongly in mind from the time of creating the storyboards was to let Gojo come into the story naturally as I drew Geto, and to present the relationship between the two as naturally as possible in that context. Rather than forcing these two characters into the story and forcing them to be understood, I wanted Gojo to enter the story naturally as I tried to have the audience understand Geto in the story of Okkotsu," he said.

Park concluded that viewers should fully understand how Gojo and Geto's relationship works, and that in the end, the time spend understanding their connection truly pays off.

"The relationship between the two characters is really special, not only in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 but also in the development of the original story, so I created this piece with the hope that the audience would understand the relationship between these two characters naturally without forcing it within the context of the story," he said.

Seeing how Gojo and Geto were as students and best friends was truly awesome and it also made the conclusion of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 more emotional.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is now screening in theaters worldwide.
