A Walker prequel series is currently in development at The CW. The original series stars Jared Padalecki, who previously starred as Sam Winchester on Supernatural. The actor is also executive producer for the upcoming show, with showrunner Anna Fricke and executive producers Seamus Fahey, Dan Lin, and Lindsey Liberatore on board.

How the Walkers Became the Walkers

Walker, now in its second season, is depicting the Texas-sized ranch rivalry between Cordell Walker's family and the well-connected Davidsons.

Padalecki said that Walker: Independence would mine the origins of the feud.

“With the prequel, we [see] how the Walkers became the Walkers, how the Davidsons became the Davidsons, and how they became our version of the Hatfields and McCoys…we go way back to the 19th century to meet the first Walker who shows up in [Texas] and see her journey into set her own path.”

Walker: Independence is set in the late 1800s and follows Abby Walker, a rich Bostonian whose husband is murdered in front of her while on their trek out West. On her journey for vengeance, Abby meets Hoyt Rawlins, a lovable rogue in need of a purpose.

Their voyage takes them to Independence, Texas, where they meet a diverse group of people fleeing their troubled pasts and seeking their aspirations. Our newfound family will struggle to cope with the changing environment around them while also becoming change agents in a community where nothing is as it appears.

How Will the Prequel Connect With Present Day Characters?

This will be Padalecki's third series to produce for The CW, although it is unknown how the series will relate with the Walker series' present-day characters. However, the names stated in the logline are well-known to fans, particularly Hoyt, played by Matt Barr in Walker, who is a descendent of the same name.

The CW is known for showing successful sequels to popular programs, such Arrowverse and Legacies, but the same cannot always be said for their prequel series. Notably, the network recently canceled production on a prequel series to The 100.

The CW appears to be keeping their hopes for the public's interest in their current properties high, with the Supernatural prequel series, The Winchesters, also in development. There is no information on who will star in the new series or when it will begin production.

For now, catch Walker Thursdays at 8 pm ET/PT at the CW.
