James Wan Asked Zack Snyder to Help on Aquaman Against Studio's Wishes

Aquaman was a very big hit for WB, which is great too since the franchise was in a slump after the release of Justice League. As it turns out, the movie could have been very different had it not been for director James Wan asking for the approval of Zack Snyder.

The news comes from Neil Daly who was said to have been in charge of test screenings for both Justice League and Aquaman. Talking to the Fire and Water Podcast, he explains:

"We could have gotten a whole movie about Aquaman basically fawning over Mera the whole time and making all kinds of dirty jokes and things like that and they really had to get away from that, which is all what Whedon had done, so Snyder had a little bit of an influence on Aquaman. James Wan was showing Zack Snyder - against the studio's wishes - cuts of the movie and early test screenings and storyboards to make sure that they're on the same page with what he originally wanted and Snyder gave his blessing of approval, bringing it back to what he wanted all along."

According to Daly, it was also Whedon who was responsible for the "teenage boy sexual humor" in Justice League including Aquaman hitting on Wonder Woman and probably the Flash landing on Diana's chest. If anything, that was a recycled joke from Age of Ultron with Bruce Banner and Black Widow. What is it with you and motor-boating, Whedon??

If you ask me, the flirty scenes in Aquaman were not the strongest at all. I guess I'm just happy it didn't turn out as bad as it could have been. To be honest, I would rather just have the characters come together in the second film—just like Peter and MJ in Sony's new Spider-Man franchise.

Catch Aquaman in theaters now.
